Library of Things

Let us know how we can improve the Library of Things with our online survey.

What is a Library of Things?
A Library of Things is a collection of items such as kitchenware, musical instruments, and games hosted at a library that library patrons can check out with their Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) library card. The Library of Things at Wilsonville Library launched on September 16, 2019.

Does my library have a collection?
Eight (8) LINCC libraries currently host Library of Things collections: Canby, Estacada, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Oregon City, Sandy/Hoodland, West Linn, and Wilsonville. Other libraries may add similar collections in the future.

How long is the checkout period for items from the Library of Things?
You may check out Wilsonville's Library of Things items for 14 days.

Can Library of Things items be renewed?
You may renew these items up to five (5) times, provided no one else has them on hold.

How many items may I check out at once from the Library of Things?
You may have up to five (5) Library of Things items checked out at a time. You may place holds on additional items, but may need to manage your holds so that they don't all become available at once. Library staff will be happy to show you how to suspend or otherwise manage items on your holds list.

Can I place a hold on a Library of Things item from a different library to be sent to my home library?
Not at this time. Each library will maintain their own, separate Library of Things collection (e.g., if Oregon City has an item you’d like to check out, you must pick that item up and return it at that library).

How does the library pay for a Library of Things?
Initial startup money came from Clackamas County Sustainability and Solid Waste (SSW). Libraries may seek additional funding to fulfill their local Library of Things collection.

What benefits to the community does having a Library of Things offer?
A Library of Things promotes sustainability by encouraging sharing, the ability to try before you buy, and access to rarely used household items.

A Library of Things supports a library’s goals of providing new and popular materials to stimulate imagination, provide new leisure activities and experiences, and promote lifelong learning. These collections will offer new resources for patrons to explore topics of personal interest where money, space, or other issues may hinder a person’s ability to do so.

How do I recommend items for the collection?
We gathered feedback from our communities to see what they would like to see included in such a collection in a survey that was made public through January and February 2019. We received 3,700 responses that helped library staff determine the best items to start out with. At any point you can recommend items to your local library staff, though there may be restrictions on what they can purchase.

Will power tools be included?
Most libraries will not be including power tools in their Library of Things collections at this time. Please check with your local library.

May I donate items to the Library of Things Collection?
Thank you for thinking of the library with your donations. The only donated Library of Things items Wilsonville Public Library is able to accept for consideration are board games and puzzles. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that we will be able to add your donated items to the collection.
